“I don’t even think about myself as a breast cancer survivor,” says the architect and owner of Kids Club House in Pine Island, New York and the mother of two adult daughters, Carol Lahti. Throughout her life, Carol experienced small lumps and tumors, but thought nothing of them. However, when the young mother of a child who attended her preschool succumbed to breast cancer, Carol decided to have the growths removed. As it turned out, one of the tumors was malignant.

Losing the battle against breast cancer was never really a consideration. “I only want to be a teacher,” says Carol, whose refreshingly inspirational outlook provides the bright colors for the canvas each of her perfect and innocent students bring to school each day. “I am their first experience with a teacher and I want it to be positive for them.”
